Flooding Update

Posted at September 13, 2008 by Greg Perkins

Rainfall amounts as of early this afternoon have totalled over 5 inches in southern portions of the county, with northern locations near the state line receiving under 2 inches. Current NWS river forecasts indicate that the Des Plaines River is expected to crest just under Action Stage, and the Fox River is expected to crest just above Action Stage. The worst flooding is occurring south of Lake County in northern Cook and DuPage counties. Many roads across northeast Illinois remain closed due to flooding. In Lake County this has included Grand Avenue just east of O’Plaine, Route 45 at the Route 137 underpass, Route 60 at I94, and Route 41 at Deerpath. Nearly every expressway in the greater Chicagoland area has been closed at some point today, and some may remain so until later this evening.

According to Lake County EMA, communities and townships have been working with residents to mitigate any flooding, and in some cases have begun to provide sandbags.

A Flood Watch remains in effect until Sunday evening. Rainfall reports are in great demand and will be greatly appreciated. You may submit reports via the Lake County SKYWARN website.
